Lab Season

'night Mother by Marsha Norman, directed by Heather Isaacks
October 7 - 12, 2025; Studio Theatre
Rehearsal period: Tuesday, September 2 - Monday, October 6

Synopsis: The scene is the living room/kitchen of a small house on an isolated country road, which is shared by Jessie and her mother. Jessie’s father is dead; her loveless marriage ended in divorce; her absent son is a petty thief and ne’er-do-well; her last job didn’t work out and, in general, her life is stale and unprofitable. As the play begins Jessie asks for her father’s service revolver and calmly announces that she intends to kill herself. At first her mother refuses to take her seriously, but as Jessie sets about tidying the house and making lists of things to be looked after, her sense of desperate helplessness begins to build. In the end, with the inexorability of genuine tragedy, she can only stand by, stunned and unbelieving, as Jessie quietly closes and locks her bedroom door and ends her profound unhappiness in one fatal, stunning and deeply disturbing moment—a moment never to be forgotten by those who have witnessed, and come to understand, her plight. - Dramatists Play Service

Character Breakdown:

JESSIE CATES - Jessie is in her late thirties or early forties, pale and vaguely unsteady, physically. It is only in the last year that Jessie has gained control of her mind and body, and tonight, she is determined to hold onto that control. She wears pants and a long black sweater with deep pockets one of which contains a notepad and there may be a pencil behind her ear or a pen clipped to one of the pockets of the sweater. As a rule, Jessie doesn't feel much like talking. Other people have rarely found her quirky sense of humor amusing. She has a peaceful energy on this night, a sense of purpose, but is clearly aware of the time passing moment by moment. Oddly enough, Jessie has never been as communicative or as enjoyable as she is on this evening, but we must know she has not always been this way. There is a familiarity between these two women that comes from having lived together for a long time. There is a shorthand to the talk and a sense of routine comfort to the way they relate to each other physically. Naturally, there are also routine aggravations.

THELMA CATES - Thelma is Jessie's mother, in her late fifties or early sixties. She has begun to feel her age and so takes it easy when she can, or when it serves her purposes to let someone help her. But she speaks quickly and enjoys talking. She believes that things are what she says they are. Her sturdiness is more a mental quality than a physical one, finally. She is chatty and nosy and this is her house.

World Builders by Johnna Adams, directed by Rowan Jalso
October 28 - November 2, 2025; Studio Theatre
Rehearsal period: Tuesday, September 23  - Monday, October 27

Synopsis: Max and Whitney both have personality disorders that cause them to retreat into imaginary worlds. When participating in a clinical drug trial that aims to rid them of their delusions, they fall in love. As the pills take effect and the fantasies subside, Max and Whitney must decide if romance is worth leaving their worlds behind. From Dramatists Play Service

Character Breakdown:
WHITNEY - 30s, outgoing and awkward, has a schizoid personality disorder, but you might not suspect it.
MAX - 30s, withdrawn and depressed, also has a schizoid personality disorder. You probably would suspect it.

I'm Gonna Marry You Tobey Maguire by Samantha Hurley, directed by Ricardo Mendoza
November 18 – 23, 2025; Studio Theatre
Rehearsal Period: Monday, October 13 - Monday, November 17

Synopsis: It’s 2004, and 14-year-old Shelby Hinkley has kidnapped Tobey Maguire, at the height of his career, to force him into marrying her. Samantha Hurley’s laugh-out-loud dark comedy, steeped in Y2K nostalgia, explodes our para-social relationships and the obsessions that detonate them. – Concord Theatricals

Character Breakdown:
SHELBY HINKLEY - (14, F) Awkward, intense. President of the Tobey Maguire Fan Club. The girl in middle school who eats lunch by herself in the bathroom. Probably some orthodontic work going on.
TOBEY MAGUIRE - (28-29, M) The famous actor. In the height of his Spiderman fame. Nasty alcoholic and drug addict. Also plays SHELBY’S FATHER.
A third actor (any gender) plays the roles of:
BRENDA DEE CANKLES - (40s-50s) Real estate agent, cornhole enthusiast, silly woman.
TOBEY MAGUIRE POSTERS - From Tiger Beat Magazine. They appear in the imagination of Shelby and Tobey, each to their own design. To Shelby, the posters are her teenage dreamboat boyfriend who only has eyes for her. To Tobey, the posters are his worst nightmare, the manufactured Hollywood version of himself he aspires to run away from.
SHELBY’S MOM - (30s-40s) Glued to her loveseat, perpetually watching daytime TV and eating yogurt.

PAPARAZZI - Buzzing, blaring voices of the toxic photographers of early 2000’s Hollywood.
