Robert Mathews

It is with great sorrow that we report that Robert C. Mathews passed away in November, 2025.  Bob was the founding member of the cognitive area in our department, an area which has grown and thrived and is now called Cognitive and Brain Sciences.  He received his Ph.D. in Experimental Psychology from Yale in 1976, after which he joined the faculty at LSU, serving for 39 years.  He taught courses on cognitive psychology, thinking and decision making, and child development.  His research focused on memory, learning, and decision making and he enjoyed the interdisciplinary aspect of his work collaborating with computer scientists, engineers, mathematicians, and physicists.
Bob also filled important administrative roles at the univeristy, serving  as the chair of the Institutional Review Board for many years, and ended his career at LSU as chair of the psychology department.
